New York marathon cancelled

This morning I heard in the news that mayor Bloomberg has finally cancelled the New York marathon which should have taken place on Sunday 4th of November.

I really think this is a good decision. When you see the damage hurricane Sandy has done, it is only just that the people who lost everything should be helped.

 

 

When you see images like these, your first aim should be to help those in need. I've never experience the likes, but my grandparents have in the 1950's. Their house got flooded and the water rose to a level of 1,5 meter. They were lucky to have some food and coal carried upstairs, so they could stand being grounded there for a while.

But imagine you have lost everything. Your house is gone. What will you do? You can only hope your insurance will pay (if you have one) and that the government will do its utmost best to better things.

Come to think of it, the entire USA is quite vulnerable for such disasters. Most of the electricity cables are above ground, which makes it very dangerous. In our country, most utilities are underground, so wind can do less damage. Also, in our house, all the sockets for electricity are aboven the level of the flood we once had - just to make sure.

I only wish Bloomberg had announced this cancellation earlier. On Thursday and Friday lots of people traveled to New York to enter in the marathon. They could have been spared the journey and the costs.
